The SME Student Innovation Tour took place on Thursday, March 2, where students explored exhibits, viewed the technologies, talked with industry experts, saw the latest manufacturing innovations, participated in hand-on-activities, and meet university students studying advanced manufacturing careers. An exciting tour stop for students was to compete in the Rippl3d Rocket Challenge hands-on activity.
Rippl3D’s Rocket Challenge enables players to 3D print air powered rockets and understand how tail geometry and nose cone weight can be used to optimize rocket flight. Participants will shoot their rockets into the scoring target points awarded for accuracy. Two variations of the Rocket Challenge will be available for players. The first Challenge is the FIN TYPE Challenge. Students will select from four different pre-printed tail fins to quickly see how tail fins affect flight. Rippl3D helps players track their attempts, results and provides a lead board that lets them learn from the attempts of other players. Once players think they have a good idea of what a great tail design might look like, they can step up to the FIN DESIGN Challenge. Players design and 3D print a custom tail fin design by selecting specific tail fin design parameters. Players use the air launcher by selecting a desired launch angle and pressure for each attempt. The combined effects of launch parameters and rocket geometries all interact in this fast passed and fun Challenge. Come test your STEM skills and have some fun!
