According to a recent Industry Week survey of companies that have attempted a Lean initiative, 72% reported unsatisfactory results. Many organizations hire Lean experts for internal implementation or use consultants. Unfortunately, many of these experts are caught in what was known about Lean before the Training Within Industry program was reintroduced into the US in 2002, and Mike Rother’s 2010 publication of Toyota Kata. These represent the two critical pieces of the Lean puzzle without which most organizations are doomed to failure.
